The Youth Justice Agency is calling all budding Picasso’s to pick up a paint brush! (21/09/2007)
The Youth Justice Agency’s Youth Conference Service has just launched a new poster competition for all budding Picasso’s aged between 10 and 17 years old.Designed to help raise awareness of the restorative justice work carried out by the Agency all entrants must produce an A4 poster using paints, coloured pencils or crayons that illustrates what restorative justice means to them.
Divided into two distinct age categories for children aged between 10 to 13 and 14 to 17 the closing date for the competition is the 19th October.
Two prize packages will be awarded within each of the five Youth Conference Service throughout Northern Ireland. These will include an MP3 player for the winning child along with sports vouchers for their school or local youth club.
“The purpose of the competition is to educate young people about what restorative justice is all about. Within the Youth Conference Service we work with the perpetrators and victims of youth crime to repair the harm that has been caused,” said Yvonne Adair, Assistant Director of the Youth Conference Service, Youth Justice Agency.
“This involves a meeting between the young offender, their family members or legal guardian, the victim and their supporters as well as a relevant local community representative and a youth diversion officer.”
“Together with a trained Youth Conference Co-ordinator they discuss the offence, detailing how and why it was committed, the impact it has had not only on the victim, but their family, the offender’s family and the wider community,” she continued.
The Youth Conference Service is now available across Northern Ireland and is helping young people who have committed an offence to take responsibility for their actions and stop re-offending.
To mark the end of the competition a special award ceremony will be held during the third week of November to coincide with Restorative Justice Week. At this event the overall winner of the competition will also be announced.
