New challenges ahead for Youth Justice Agency - Paul Goggins (22/05/2008)

Criminal Justice Minister Paul Goggins has praised the work of the Youth Justice Agency and highlighted the challenges in the year ahead as he published its sixth Corporate and Business Plan today.

A challenging new programme of work has been set out for the year ahead which will help address the needs of victims and at the same time help young people divert their energies away from criminal activity or from re-offending.

Paul Goggins, MP said: “The Youth Justice Agency has gone from strength to strength in recent years. It performs an important role in challenging young people to think of the consequences of their actions on their victims and on the wider community.

“The Agency has supported the development of a youth conferencing service that is a model of excellence and this work will continue by further embedding restorative practices throughout its services.

“Another key challenge is to divert young people away from offending and the Agency has developed a programme of interventions proportionate to the assessed risk of re-offending.

“These are designed to help young people stay away from crime and anti-social behaviour and it is vital that this work also continues.

“The progress the Agency has made within a demanding and changing criminal justice system in Northern Ireland is impressive.”
