Youth Justice Agency hosts reception in Downpatrick (24/03/2009)

Guests from across Downpatrick and the surrounding area gathered at a reception in the Youth Justice Agency’s offices in the town on Friday 20th March to learn more about the work of the Agency, both in the local area and further afield.

The Youth Justice Agency works closely with young people who have been involved in offending behaviour. In partnership with other statutory agencies, voluntary organisations and community groups staff engage with young people and their families to challenge the offending behaviour, build on strengths and create opportunities for positive change in their lives.

The Agency provides a restorative approach to the youth justice system where victims and offenders can meet face to face.

Deirdre O’Neill, manager of the Youth Justice Agency’s Downpatrick office addressed the guests which included Eddie McGrady MP, MLAs Catriona Ruane and Willie Clarke, and many local councillors. Staff from across the Agency’s directorates, including Chief Executive Bill Lockhart, were also available to chat with guests and answer questions. Some young people and their parents also shared their first hand experience of work with the Agency.

Deirdre said “I am delighted that so many people took time in their busy schedules today to hear more about the work of the Youth Justice Agency. Throughout 2008 we worked with 76 young people in the Downpatrick district who have been involved in offending behaviour. We challenged their negative behaviours and encouraged them to think about the consequences of their behaviour on their victims, their families and their local community.”

Deirdre also paid tribute to the many statutory, voluntary and community groups present. She said “The work we do can only be achieved with the aid of such groups. They provide a valuable support service to the Agency and the young people with many also providing opportunities for young people to engage in reparative activity and voluntary work in their communities. We are grateful for these excellent partnerships and hope to extend and develop the in the coming year”.
