Young people promised summer fun as Tag rugby scheme is launched (10/07/2009)

Young people aged 13 to 17 are being encouraged to try something new this summer as Tag rugby returns.

Supported by the Irish Rugby Football Union (Ulster Branch)  and  the Youth Justice Agency the scheme is being run on three consecutive Wednesday evenings by Londonderry YMCA Rugby club (19th and 26th  August) and City of Derry Rugby Club (2nd September). Each session will take place between 7pm and 8.30pm and is open to all youth in the area.

Free transport is available with pick up and drop off points across the Waterside and Cityside.

Tag rugby is a non-contact sport and with qualified coaches on hand with advice young people will improve their fitness while learning a variety of new skills, including rugby specific and team working skills. This is also an ideal way to get to know new people and get a taste for rugby with the view to getting involved in one of our local clubs.

Peter Quinn, Centre manager of Youth Justice Agency Community Services, Foyle said “I am delighted that the Agency has been able to support this scheme for a third year. Previous schemes have been very successful with a cross section of young people taking part. I was particularly encouraged with the number of girls participating and hope we can improve on this further this year with the additional support provided by City of Derry’s women’s rugby team. Tag rugby has grown in popularity over recent years and is an ideal way for local young people to take part in a new sport while also improving self discipline, communication and citizenship skills.

Apart from the physical benefits associated with sport it is also a great way of making new friends and breaking down barriers between age, race and religion. I would like to thank the IRFU and the two local clubs for making the scheme possible.”

Jonathan Quigley, Rugby Development officer with the IRFU Ulster Branch added ” We are again delighted to work with the Youth Justice Agency on this project. We are always seeking ways of interacting with local youths and encouraging more participation in sport. Rugby has enjoyed a boost this year with Ireland’s historic Grand Slam win and Tag rugby provides a fantastic introduction to the game for many. The emphasis will be on fun, fitness and social interaction and I look forward to three action packed summer evenings. “

Spaces on the programme are limited to 100 so if you want some summer fun or think you could be the next Steven Ferris don’t delay and get in contact with Peter Quinn, Youth Justice Agency Community Services, Foyle on 028 7136 5593.

The closing date has now been extended so if you're interested its not too late to register.
