Youth Justice Agency invites young photographers to “Get Snapping” ( 5/01/2010)

The Youth Justice Agency has launched its “Get Snapping” photographic competition for 2010 in conjunction with The Co-operative Membership and Harrison Photography, and supported by local actor and television personality Dan Gordon.

Following the success of last year’s competition the Agency is giving young people another opportunity to express their ideas about how to reduce youth crime. Entrants are being asked to capture the following theme in a Dan Gordon helps launch the Agency's 2010 Photographic competitionphotographic image or montage:

The competition will be divided into two distinct age categories for young people aged 10 to 13 and 14 to 17 years. The closing date for the entries is 12 February 2010.

Regional prizes will be awarded to winners in each age group from each county across Northern Ireland. Prizes of digital cameras, courtesy of the Co-operative Membership, will be presented to individual winners along with vouchers for their school or club. One lucky overall winner will also be given the opportunity to experience a professional photoshoot courtesy of award winning photographers Harrison Photography.

All winners accompanied by their parents/guardians and a representative from their school or club will also be invited to a prize giving ceremony in Hillsborough Castle in Spring 2010.

Launching the competition, Chief Executive of the Youth Justice Agency Bill Lockhart, said,

“I am delighted to announce the Agency’s “Get Snapping” competition for a second year.  Last year proved that there’s a wealth of talented and creative young people in the province and I am sure there are many more who will relish the opportunity to express their ideas. Entrants do not have to be technical experts or have the best equipment available as interpretation of the theme and originality of ideas is equally important.  Indeed most young people now have a camera facility on their mobile phones so there is ample opportunity for many more to take up our challenge and “Get Snapping”.

“I am also delighted to have the support of The Co-operative Membership and Harrison Photography who have kindly supplied the prizes, and of course Dan Gordon who took time out from his busy schedule to help launch the competition.”

Local television personality Dan Gordon added,

I am honoured to support the Youth Justice Agency’s competition for a second time. I presented the prizes at last year’s ceremony and was amazed at the breadth of talent on display. Young people receive much negative publicity but competitions like this provide an excellent opportunity for them to express themselves positively and dispel the myth that they are all involved in crime or anti social behaviour.”

Chris Boyd, Co-operative affairs and democratic services manager said:

“At The Co-operative we are committed to supporting the positive contribution that children and young people can make to their local communities. That’s why we are very pleased to support the Youth Justice Agency’s fantastic project and we look forward to seeing the photographs produced by the young people.”

John Harrison from Harrison Photography added “Photography can be a very powerful medium for expression and the “Get Snapping” competition is a great way for budding photographers to showcase their talents. I look forward to taking the 2010 winner on a professional photoshoot to help develop their creative and technical skills.”
