Hanson welcomes NIHRC report on Juvenile Justice Centre (18/10/2006)

The progress highlighted in the report would not have been possible without the continued dedication and professionalism of staff at the centre and I wish to pay tribute to their hard work and commitment to the young people in their care.

Criminal Justice Minister, David Hanson MP, today welcomed a report by the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission on the Juvenile Justice Centre.

David Hanson said, “I welcome this encouraging and constructive report which acknowledges the positive developments within the centre. The Juvenile Justice Centre provides a safe and secure environment in which young people can address their offending behaviour.

“The improvements in education provision in the centre, with the emphasis on a child-centred approach, is particularly welcome. This will help young people as they prepare to return to the community by improving their education and learning skills and ensuring that they are less likely to re-offend.

“The progress highlighted in the report would not have been possible without the continued dedication and professionalism of staff at the centre and I wish to pay tribute to their hard work and commitment to the young people in their care.

“The report has made a number of recommendations and the Government will give them careful consideration. A new juvenile justice centre is nearing completion and this will greatly enhance both the facilities and services available to give the young people the best possible chance for their future rehabilitation.”

Note for Editors

¨       The research was carried out in June 2005 and built on earlier work undertaken by the Commission between 2000 and 2002.

¨       The present Juvenile Justice Centre is located at Rathgael, Bangor and can accommodate up to 40 young people.

¨       A new purpose designed centre will replace the existing facility on the same site in early 2007.
