Role Of Victims

The Conference Process provides the victim with the opportunity to hold the young person accountable for the harm he/she has caused and to receive some form of reparation. It enables the victim to tell his or her story and to ask the young person questions. The victim can also influence the plan that is formulated to prevent further offending.

The victim is contacted by a Youth Conference Co-ordinator to arrange a visit to explain the process and be offered the option of participating in the Conference. This may be face to face, by phone or video conference or other available options and he/she may be accompanied by a supporter, which may be a friend, a family member etc. A preparation leaflet has been designed to help the victim prepare for the Conference and the Co-ordinator will assist in the completion of this if required.

If the victim chooses to attend travel expenses will be reimbursed. If the victim does not wish to participate he/she can still choose to be kept informed of the outcome.
